Camera Movement: Dollies, Sliders and Jibs

One of the best ways to add production value to your videos is to utilize controlled camera movement. Hollywood directors and DPs have long known the impact of dolly, crane, jib, Steadicam, trucking and helicopter shots to enhance the movies they work on.

While that level of production may be beyond most corporate and Indie budgets there are now affordable solutions to achieve similar results. This class will introduce you to some of the most common products and tools available to spiff up your productions without breaking the bank.

We will introduce you to sliders, dolly systems, jibs, Glidecams, The Ronin M, drones and other camera movement gear and discuss the theory behind the use of various movement techniques. The second half of the class will be devoted to hands-on time so you can try out each of the camera movement tools we have available for yourself. It promises to be a fun and “moving ” experience for all!

The Art of the Video Interview

Compelling interviews are essential to good story telling in video, documentary and TV. However, getting an informative, dynamic, and emotionally connected interview is often much more difficult than you’d expect. Lights, cameras, nerves, difficult subject matter, self consciousness and fear often make people freeze up, close down, and give bad interviews.

In this interactive 3-hour course, you will learn how to create an environment that is comfortable for you and your interviewee, how to prepare yourself for the interview, how to prepare your interviewee for the interview and how to conduct an interview that draws out the kind of emotion and information that works for your project.

Western State Colorado University Screenwriting Bootcamp

Western State Colorado University is offering a 2-week summer intensive for screenwriters taught by the Graduate Program’s Screenwriting Concentration Director JS Mayank.

The intensive has three separate stages.

The first stage focuses on preparation. Participants read required materials, familiarize themselves with the formatting and basic structure, if they haven’t done so previously, and come to the workshop ready to pitch their ideas.

The second stage is the actual eight-day workshop. Each student pitches a story, creates a treatment, character biographies, an outline, and then writes the first act (roughly 30 pages) of the proposed screenplay or TV pilot/spec. This portion is rigorous, with an emphasis on writing, rewriting, critiquing and polishing words on the page.

The third stage focuses on support, including one-on-one meetings with screenwriting faculty to go over future writing plans. Students may also, for an additional fee, register for the three-day Writing the Rockies creative writing conference, which runs directly after the intensive ends, and includes discussions about the business of screenwriting and how to break into the industry.

Hands on with Adobe Premiere Pro

What You’ll Learn
Video. The world seems to be all about video these day, but shooting alone does not create a masterpiece. Learning the eye and techniques of video editing is needed. Editing is deciding what stays vs. what goes. It’s building a product that really gets across that “oh so important” message. Adobe Premiere Pro is an editing software for professionals. It allows you to cut and paste, pick and choose, assemble, fine tune and polish all the clips you worked so hard to capture.

This one-day, hands-on intensive will cover:

Input – pulling your video or “media” from the source to a hard drive.
Organization – starting/opening a Premiere Pro project, organizing your unedited material and prepping for editing.
Interface – a quick tour and rehash of the Premiere Pro User interface including the tools and the many panels.
Basic edits – how to separate the good from the not so good parts of a shot and how to assemble them into a sequence that will be your final “movie”.
Audio – how to recognize and adjust the audio for your needs.
Fine Tuning – how to clean up your rough edit into a polished product
Effects – an overview of Premiere Pro offered effects and titles
Output – prepping your piece for export out of Premiere Pro for multiple sources

It’s going to be a jam-packed day of software operation and process skill-training giving you the tools you’ll need to put the pieces together with a professional polished look at the end.

Drone Videography Certificate Intensive

This two-day certificate intensive is designed to give you the knowledge and practical experience necessary to capture professional-quality aerial video with a DJI-brand drone.

Program Description:
Dramatically enhance your video productions with beautiful aerial video! In this two-day intensive, you’ll learn how to fly a drone, learn how to get the very best results and have plenty of time to practice with guidance from our expert instructor who shoots over 200 projects every year!

Drones are everywhere these days and the technology is very advanced! As a result, cinematographers need the knowledge and skills to shoot professional looking drone video in order to stay competitive.

This is a great way to learn how to shoot professional drone video in just two days rather than struggling to learn on your own and damaging your equipment as you make avoidable mistakes. Gaining a solid understanding of flying basics and learning piloting best practices will ensure that you capture the caliber of footage that you need for your productions.

When done right, you’ll be amazed at the shots you can capture that were previously reserved just for big budget Hollywood films! Please keep in mind that the certificate you receive from Boulder Digital Arts at the end of the class is a “Certificate of Completion” from Boulder Digital Arts and not any kind of FAA certification.

Who Should Take This Class:
This class is designed for beginners with some video production experience who want to learn how to fly a drone to capture incredible aerial video from an expert. However, even experienced drone operators will gain valuable insights and tips!

If you’d like to participate in the hands-on portions of the class, you’ll need to bring your own drone & let us know at time of registration exactly what model of drone you are planning to use. To prepare, you must have:

Your own DJI drone, batteries and charger
Your own iPad, Tablet, or Smart Phone & charger
Downloaded and install the DGI Go App
If you don’t own a drone, they can be rented from several vendors including the following:

https://www.cameralends.com/rent/drones
http://www.cameralensrentals.com/Product/DJI%20Phantom%203%20Pro%20Drone

Special BDA Discounts on New Drone Purchases From Local Vendor!
If you’re considering purchasing a drone, BDA has arranged for BDA students to obtain a special discount at Multicopter Warehouse on any purchase of a DJI quadcopter. Students can use the discount code “BDADRONE16” for a 7% discount off their already competitive prices!

Please note: BDA and the instructor are not responsible for ANY damage caused by the instructor, staff, students, location, or others.
